The project aims at connecting the six different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Laos together through an Internet Exchange Point (IXP). Today each ISP has an own leased line to a foreign country where they connect to the global Internet. The problem today is that there aren't any connections between the different ISPs in Laos. That means if one computer is going to access a computer on another ISPs subnet in Laos, the traffic will be routed over Thailand or Singapore where the ISPs connects to the Internet today. If the ISPs could be connected through an IXP in Laos it will be both economical and technical gains since the ISP could reduce the traffic load on their leased lines and therefor paying less. The end user will also benefit from a faster network when they access local content within Laos. The project was initiated by Lao National Internet Committee (LANIC) which is a governmental agency in Laos. With the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) they hope that the Internet Exchange Point will create an environment suitable for local ICT development within Laos.
